  1. James, James is seriously destroying you in the Santa beard department. I didn’t want to mention anything previously, but a question arises, will you take up the challenge?

  2. I just wanted to point out a few… points regarding the whole solar shebang.

In my view, solar is great fro offsite use. Even with clouds, as long as you’re not too far to the North or the South. Batteries are getting better and there’s a huge cost saving potential in storing heat, instead of electricity. Something which is fairly easy to achieve by implementing floor heating via heat radiating cables lines drawn through concrete floor. With proper insulation, such stored energy will release slowly for days.

When you want to go global with solar or wind or whatever else, the problem is you multiply all that is bad with such approaches by a hundred or a thousand and instead of having appropriately sized solar panel greed on your roof, for example, you get a giant area plated with it, with great losses and needing giant batteries.

These sources will always be bad if people don’t change their way of thinking. About 25% of incoming solar energy coming to the panel turns to electricity, what about the remainder? It turns to heat, mostly. Can you make good use of that heat in your house? You can bet your sweet ass that you can, if by no other means but to have some simple fans siphoning hot air from the space below the panels into your house. Or by using this warm place as the cooler side for you AC unit, which will need to work a lot less to heat up your space to 24°C if the outside temperature is 18-20°C instead of being close or below the freezing point.

Many people invested in solar and coupled it with mining to burn all the extra free electricity and get some heat in the process. This is getting less and less lucrative but I bet the pioneers in this industry made a nice bundle.

  3. The Creepy Line – FILM
    https://www.thecreepyline.com/

Last Sunday, the 18th, my ex-wife invites me over for dinner and to watch “The Creepy Line” documentary. Her second time through it.

It was a good documentary, bringing up many valid aspects of how Google and Facebook spy on and manipulate people. The film does an excellent job of starting off slow, giving a layman’s view and background of the internet and the evolution of Google. The film tries to crucify Google.
However, the film does not mention really how the government (CIA/NSA) helped to spawn and is incestually married to Google, but rather, the film eludes that Google might influence government.

The film entirely focuses on Google and Facebook. Especially Google.
It does not go into the spying and manipulation from other platforms such as AOL/Yahoo, the mainstream media, the government, etc. It especially is quiet about how Amazon tracks your data. Oh!…the film can be watched on Amazon.

The film repeatedly mentions the possibility of government regulation on companies like Google.

“The Creepy Line” also goes into how Google and Facebook can influence elections. They spend some time on this aspect. And I admit, it was interesting. There is a lot of talk about the two party system and swaying the vote.
Almost nil is any mention of anarchist / voluntaryist values and decentralizing towards alternatives, except for one literal heavy-weight internet guru stating: “Stop using them”.

  4. “cemanuel” made an interesting comment the other day on the November OPEN Thread regarding FACEBOOK.
“Cemanuel” asks for experts to give insight.

    EXCERPT
“…A friend posted some pics on Facebook yesterday of a Thanksgiving gathering we had for friends. When her post appeared on the timeline, there was a glitch that caused some of the photos not to load. The boxes contained background text in the place of the photos. The background text was partially cutoff but it looked something like… “Image may contain: one or more people, dog, sitting, table and drinking”… There were several images that had this text literally labeling every item and action in the picture….”

    • I like his vision and scaling to “can be produced absolutely anywhere”.
      Cottage Industry type approach.

  5. On Christmas Day of 2012 after much contemplation I decided discard by razors, and I haven’t used one since. For me, and not necessarily others, I had to admit I was shaving out of pride.

Of all things that seem to have changed in my interactions with others, is that having a beard, ugly as it is, lowers the barriers between me and the people I meet. No longer being clean shaven coat-and-tie, but rather just a guy has been marvelous. It doesn’t get you into the executive’s office, but it sure has helped in dealing with the guy down the street.

  6. Sorry James, I tried very hard to find a good news story, but I really have to scrape the barrel to find one these days!

The best I could find is lead poisoning in tap water.

    https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/health-problems/households-advised-to-run-taps-for-30-seconds-amid-lead-poisoning-fears/news-story/07a466ecba85195259ec7e3ce7259411

Why is that good news? Well it’s not, but it is at least good that the news is making it in the mainstream. Maybe it will warn a few more people.

Of course the fluoride conspiracy sites warned of the dangers of lead in brass fittings back in 2008 and only now it is mainstream news.
