Episode 367 – Robots Are Taking Our Fake News Jobs!

by | Nov 8, 2019 | Podcasts | 25 comments

You’ve heard that the independent media (i.e. the media that actually challenges the establishment narratives) is full of Russian bots, and you probably know that this is neo-McCarthyist hooey. But did you know that most of the major newswires and online news outlets are already publishing bot-generated content? Well they are. So what does it mean that the establishment fake news is coming from the hand of bots? Find out in this edition of The Corbett Report.

  1. Hi everyone,

if you like to investigate AI generated Text further, I would like to point you to the GPT-2 Model, which has just been released recently. Here is a link to the Blogpost on OpenAI:
    https://openai.com/blog/gpt-2-1-5b-release/

Also I like to link to a Video on the Computerphile Channel, where Rob Miles talks about the developments in the GPT-2 Model and is speculating about the reason why it wasn’t released at that point:
    https://youtu.be/AJxLtdur5fc

    Hope you enjoy.

Thank you James for raising concerns about the solution that we will be presented with.

    • “English enough sentences.” I like that James. Pardon me if I steal it
for my own use. I do, in part, concur with your concluding remark, “It’s game over for humanity.” I suppose by that you mean it is game over for
a physically secure and predictable life, for most of us.
      Yes, I agree.

The death of democracy in the U.S.A. (which took little more than a
decade) coincided with the headlong transition into this Information-based economy, an era dominated by a fresh generation of wire-pullers, sneak
thieves and robber barons. Americans have only two futures ahead – anarchy or despotism. As your video-essays attest, week after week, despotism has the edge. The compounding horror is that the two-choice dilemma simultaneously threatens major populations in Europe, Asia and South America. This will not be an ‘Old World’ – ‘New World’ standoff, but rather a a globe-girdling archipelago of despotic states. The Chinese currently harvest organs from Falun Gung dissidents. In the near future the British will harvest organs from “White Supremacists” who mock their social “Betters”. Pick a country. Paste on a label describing something
      truly beastly.

Here in Canada we should have been somewhat safe from the dystopian nightmare that is rolling in like an impenetrable fog, but our Royal Corps of Office Holders have not taken a single step in the direction of protecting us.

Isn’t it strange, that you and I were born in an era when “Deep Thinkers”
were mocked by the man on the street. Now it is the “Clear Thinkers” who
are loathed and ridiculed. Every Pub needs a dart board. Duck!
      Ron Jack in B.C.

    • Looks to me they finished staged release and final model is out.
And the reason for release is: “…to facilitate detection of outputs of GPT-2 models.”

Interesting is what they say who is potential mis-user (the same link):

“Our partners at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies’ Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC) found that extremist groups can use GPT-2 for misuse, specifically by fine-tuning GPT-2 models on four ideological positions: white supremacy, Marxism, jihadist Islamism, and anarchism. ”

Like the real bad actors don’t possess better models already. The approach GPT-2 is using is not something fundamentally new in AI.

  2. Just another wax offered up for the fax. Fax wax. This message offered up by predictive text by Google.
    Now the corrected text( offered up by a real person). { Just another Vax offered up for the facts. Fax -Vax }
The predictive text won’t even let you type wax, er… vax. I see what you mean JC. AI control grid. Damn them!

    • Thank you for the tocsin, I’ve been immunized adequately. So good to be waxinated against such disease.

  3. You know…back in the days when I used to have long arguments online(10 years ago..?) I actually think I came across AI bots. I thought at the time ‘they’ were maybe using the internet to train AI chatbots… a few times you’d come across accounts that would act weird kinda like the ‘Liza’ chat AI, now maybe English just wasn’t the users 1st language.
I remember vaguely wondering if one day they would use AI’s to fill out comments sections but didn’t think too much about it back then.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELIZA
meh.. could also just be people running five conversations at the same time…
The fact that those with power feel the NEED to do all this butt-covering indicates that something bad is going to happen since few actually care about whats going on as long as their personal lives are comfortable.

    • Duck, the link was interesting and I could not agree more. Weizenbaum’ s work had to be valued as a tool for those who needed to cover their butts. The “… allowed for a deceptivly intelligent response that deceived many individuals…” The important part, a promising tool of deception by those willing to use it on those, too comfortable, to suspect a thing nor do anything about it.
The control grid for ” butt covering” goes many layers deep. Once you break down a barrier there seems to be another and another and …on and on.

      • GeneralBottleWasher
The odd thing now I think about it is how many REAL humans just pattern match conversation- to the point that they answer questions that they imagined were asked or hear something you never said…. makes me wonder if I do it and fly on auto pilot too.
Your so right with ‘Once you break down a barrier there seems to be another and another and …on and on…’ but the danger is that we can loose all trust in logic/history/ or even the ability to truly know stuff- post modern post reality thinking is the most dangerous weapon they use.

        • Duck, guilty as charged. Patterns seem to be how we interpret the world around us. Until we fully understand we probably try to ” match ” the patterns we can’t fully comprehend.
Trying to understand ‘ meme’ for instance. I don’t remember ever having seen nor heard this word in use until 2017 or so.
I can’t ever remember seeing it in print. It seems to have appeared from nowhere and now its importance forces itself on our existence. That is troubling to explain why it is, what it is and from when , where, and who delivered it into existence. What does it mean to meme?
Doesn’t seem to be in spell check even. Anybody?

          • 1st time I HEARD the word meme was (I think) in Star Trek Voyager when there was a false memmory that kept spreading from person to person…. It may have come up in ‘the selfish gene’ but I’m not sure… I know it came up in the 1992 science fiction ‘snowCrash’ which is actually an interesting portrayal- it had a ton of ideas about how people acted on instinct before language allowed them to actually be ‘awake’ or fully conscious… it had a ton of ideas on language- including some stuff thats kinda like an Uber version of NLP (which is often likened to magic learning a 2nd language well provides some protection)and it used the idea of a meme like a gene for behavior- and there was a ‘meme virus’ which was used to control people but it could be spread either over their version of the internet (which was cooler then it turned out…) or by hearing it … or by BLOOD infection.
Actually, thanks for making me remember- it was kinda a weird book, alchemical or hermetic thinking (they were big on memory palaces and stuff like that) I guess… only thing was the writing style was really irritating seeing as it was originally done as stage directions for a planned CGI movie and he was to lazy to fix it properly.
I may have to dig it out and re read
Some sci fi discussion of the book…
            https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/11187/are-the-language-elements-in-snow-crash-supported-by-science
Ahh… yes, revolting Dawkins popularized the idea https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memetics

  4. What’s to prevent the powers that shouldn’t be from “replacing” James Corbett and the Corbett Report website with a deep fake that looks and sounds exactly like the real one? With videos by James Corbett that would certainly look and act like James Corbett, and articles that would read like James Corbett would write them?

By the way, there was a video I saw on the Corbett Report in which Broc West appeared and suspiciously didn’t look real, but instead looked “generated” (eyebrow movements in particular). Does anybody remember the video I am referring to?

    • Won Fat
lol… good argument for forming local groups of friends, thats reminiscent of the (somewhat more violent) system of reading groups the great author Dennis Wheatly suggested as a cure for tyranny.
If most people have three trustworthy buds you really dont NEED to go to the murderous extent Wheatly suggests because the people doing bad things are fundamentally bullies who want easy prey.
      Here, found something he wrote
      http://www.denniswheatley.info/sams_books/lettertoposterity.htm

    • Sorry to disappoint you Won Fat but I can confirm that that was indeed the real me, in the flesh, with zero “generated” eyebrow movements.

A dying computer combined with a poor Australian internet connection is the reason that recording of me came out the way it did.

      • Actually, I’m not disappointed. Thanks for your response.

I tried to look for the video at first, and considered that is was the one flammable suggested. However, It didn’t look as bad as I remembered. I considered that maybe it was my internet connection in the first place, and then felt rather stupid for suggesting that it looked “generated”. I felt less stupid after flammable identified that same video, and provided some commentary.

Concerning my first paragraph, if such a “switch” was to take place, I assume that after a period of several episodes (to allow for a smooth transition, of course) that eventually James’ replacement would say something to let the cat out of the bag, and most of us would recognize it.

        Thanks again.

      • I don’t know what kind of computer generating capabilities that you two actually have, but…

It seems like you might like to try it sometime as a gag, or simply to see if you could get away with it (which would be totally devious).

    • Considering that James provides sources in the show notes and regularly urges viewers to check the sources and do their own follow-up research — rather than blindly listening to everything he says — it shouldn’t matter if they attempted to ‘replace’ James with a deep fake. Additionally, if they did attempt such a thing, nearly every Corbett Report viewer would know it based on the content (what is being said and what is being linked to).

  5. The bit about AI robot newsreaders reminds me of an article I read recently. They will be making a Vietnam war movie soon starring……….James Dean.

As far as I know it’s not a comedy, but serious. He will be deep fake re-animated. In a full length feature film. That’s quite a leap.
Who knows what the finished product will look like. I won’t watch such a Frankenstein’s monster morbidity. Maybe the trailer, for educational purposes.
So what do we suppose is going on here? Predictive programming? Or a reference point to be exploited in the future to debunk true stories, which JC brought up in this podcast. Considering the deep state’s influence in the film
industry, I can’t see this as a random, director vanity project, but something calculated.

And speaking of movies, I have another recommend for anyone who might be interested.
The Collector (1965) starring Terence Stamp. Quite a film. Creepy, maybe a bit disturbing, but not in the way of the film discussed above.

    • I saw that movie years ago… it was really good.
I recall thinking that he wouldn’t have gone to the dark obsessive side had he had to work, but the money that gave him leisure allowed him to delve where he shouldn’t have. Kinda like what the ultra rich might get up without normal human limitations on their appetites ?
Funny because science is also a product of the leisured class- i guess it just lets out whats inside

    • James Dean actually died about a decade before the Vietnam War even happened LOL

  6. 9:02 was a beautiful moment.

James, I could not stop laughing at the level of sarcasm you applied.

Beyond that, this is quite the topic. I can’t wait until I engage my father in law in another “discussion” and he goes ahead and claims the source I cite is not verified by whatever Darpa created fact checker.

    Won’t that be fun.

  7. On the bright side this could backfire badly if the “fake news” is still available. Those in the know might see the appellation as “must read”.

  8. I gotta chuckle. I can hear the robots complaining now: “They are taking our jobs!”
