Since 2008, scientists from IBM have been working with DARPA’s Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics (SyNAPSE) programme.
They have developed the chip, or processor called TrueNorth, which is claimed to be efficient, scalable, and flexible non-von Neumann architecture using contemporary silicon technology.

A positive project of DARPA several years ago (early 2000s) was funding Sonex for the development of their enhanced internal combustion engine. See http://www.sonexresearch.com.
The Sonex automotive engine is almost ready for marketing. I expect them to offer VW a solution to their emissions problems sometime in 2017.
Does that offer only lower emissions or is fuel efficiency affected as well?
