The subprime mortgage debacle and the resulting forclosures are claiming more than human victims. Many people who are being displaced from their homes are having a difficult time in keeping their pets with them.

In doing an internet search, I found that this problem is sweeping across every state in the Union.

If you are an animal lover then you will understand that losing a pet is another painful hardship piled on top of the other difficult changes people who are losing their homes are experiencing.

Animal shelters across the country are feeling the impact of the housing crisis evidenced by the number of pets appearing at their doorsteps. And it is not only cats and dogs needing new homes, farm animals are also casualties of foreclosed farms and ranches. From mules to sheep to chickens and horses, these animals are finding themselves homeless as well.

The saddest victims of this economic crisis are the animals who are left behind with the homes people abandon, sometimes locked inside closets where it is nearly impossible for a potential rescuer to hear their cries for help. Many animals are not discovered until they have starved to death or died of dehydration. Others are simply dropping their pets onto the streets to try and fend for themselves.

I have two rescues here at my feet right now, they are loving and loyal. It's almost as if they know I snatched them from the jowels of certain death and they never seem to stop thanking me for it.

If you are looking for a pet, please consider adopting one of these poor, sad and lonely displaced animals. The animal will thank you and so will the person who can no longer afford to keep them.
